About Omit
Omit is a free Chrome ad blocker built for the post-Manifest-V3 era. Made by people who wanted ad blocking that didn’t come with an upsell, an analytics ping, or a whitelisted-advertiser list.
Why we built Omit
In 2024 Chrome started enforcing Manifest V3 for new extensions. The ad blockers most people had relied on for a decade — uBlock Origin, AdBlock — had to rewrite themselves or be deprecated. Some shipped “Lite” versions; some ran into the buzzsaw of the new declarativeNetRequest rule limits.
At the same time, the most-installed “free” blockers were quietly participating in pay-to-be-allowed advertising programs, or selling browsing data, or upselling premium tiers from inside the popup. The free tier was getting worse.
We thought there should be a third option: an ad blocker designed from day one for Manifest V3, with no monetization scheme, that’s good enough that you install it and forget it exists. Omit is that.
Our mission
Make the open web a quiet, private, fast place to read — for everyone, for free, forever.
That mission has three parts:
- Quiet. Block ads, pop-ups, autoplay video, sticky overlays, and cookie banners.
- Private. Stop trackers, analytics, and fingerprinting. We can’t see your browsing — we don’t want to.
- Fast. Pages should load instantly. Removing ads usually makes them load 2-3x faster.
The technology
Omit is a Chrome Manifest V3 extension built on:
- @adguard/tswebextension — the open-source filtering engine that powers AdGuard’s extensions, used here under its MIT license.
- declarativeNetRequest — Chrome’s native rule engine. Filters compile to DNR rules at build time, so blocking happens at the browser’s C++ networking layer with negligible overhead.
- EasyList, EasyPrivacy, AdGuard Filters, Peter Lowe’s list — the same community-maintained filter lists used by every reputable blocker.
- TypeScript & webpack — for the extension popup, settings page, and background service worker.
Who makes Omit
Omit is maintained by a small group of independent developers who wanted a better blocker for ourselves. We are not a venture-backed startup, we are not a shell for a larger company, and we are not affiliated with any advertising or anti-advertising business.
We pay for hosting and time out of pocket. If Omit ever grows enough to need help with costs, we’ll accept donations — never run ads, never sell data, never paywall a feature.
Our principles
- Free, forever. No premium tier. No paywall. No “upgrade for advanced features.”
- No telemetry. The extension does not phone home. The website does not run analytics. We can’t see what sites you visit.
- No acceptable ads. No advertiser pays us to be allowed through.
- No referral links. Some “free” blockers inject affiliate codes into your shopping links. We don’t.
- Open development. We publish our roadmap, ship a public changelog, and the source for the extension itself is being prepared for public release.
